As the name Puncham suggests five; Mrs. Rani Poddar along with four of her friends formed the child aid association PUNCHAM in the year 1980. Puncham is the soul of Mrs. Poddar. The essence of this organization is to do good for the society, especially children. Her humble nature has made her turn towards the underprivileged part of the society, to improve it with her Midas touch.

She has helped the ones who are not so successful into people who are now capable and self-reliant citizens. Today many people are inspired by her mindfulness and pure spirit. With this sense of belongingness, Mrs. Rani Poddar, the founder president of Puncham has nurtured the organization through her motherly care and guidance.

”The bonds forged between us are as strong as that of a family, we are proud to be called the Puncham parivar”, says Mrs. Poddar.

Puncham started with organizing melas, providing homes for children, midday meals to feed the physically and visually disabled, distributing food packets, providing wheelchairs and ambulances to various hospitals and the needy.

Incidentally, at a dinner in 1982, Puncham came up with an idea of establishing cold drinking water fountains across Mumbai. This idea came into being because Mrs. Poddar witnessed one early morning, a poor man quenching his thirst by drinking water from a roadside drain.

Hence, PUNCHAM built the first drinking water fountain (Pyau) at Girgaum Chowpatty to provide free cold & clean drinking water to those who had to compromise by drinking unhealthy contaminated water from roadsides. Thereafter in the next two decades, Mrs. Poddar and her members established ‘eleven’ more such free cold drinking water fountains which are located near Bombay Hospital, Priyadarshini Park, Taraporewala Aquarium, Teen Batti, Nariman Point, Fashion Street & Gateway of India etc.

Spreading cultural awareness, health awareness and traditional awareness is also one of the prime motives of Puncham. Yoga sessions by esteemed yoga gurus, Krishna Janamashtmi celebrations followed by bhajans at Mrs. Poddar’s residence are a part of an annual feature of Puncham’s agenda. Hanuman Jayanti Celebrations, Holi celebrations, Cultural Music programmes also constitute Puncham’s calendar.

PUNCHAM- a child aid association is a registered public charitable trust registered under the Bombay trusts act.
